A quick summary of the plot of Infinity wars
« on: June 28, 2015, 01:42:12 AM »
I make this mega post to record the evolution of the different factions since the core game, I think that it will be interesting how this enormous war evolved since the rifts opened.
I simply like the plot, this is a little tribute to it.

Let's begin.

Before the plot started (1000 years ago):

Only one dimension, ours, the characters represented in the Factionless cards showed a world slighty more advanced than ours, it seemed completely devoid of any magic, It had guns robots, artirelly, planes, soldiers, but almost nothing out of our reality. ALthough some cards as firebolt put the Third Clarke's Law in the air.
Enyah more than factionless is more all the factions at the same time

The Calamity happened, an event originated in Earth so powerful that at a biological level it wiped humanity from Earth and a metaphysichal level it created Infinity planes or dimensions, it only left one known survivor, Aleta who gained immortality and was divided along with the planes as a constant in all of them (If there is a new world, it has an Aleta in it).

The Calamity is also a card in game with a raw power almost unrivaled, if you can afford it, you can wipe all the board of cards, removing them from the game.

Talich, Reisch, Avarrach and the Untamed World (The original one), this are only planets that we know and the ones where the actual story happpens.

A quick look to the maps can make you think that they are the same planet and although geographically talking it's true 1000 years of independent evoluton has diverge them not only in terms of species but the technology and capacity of magic has also changed.

The opening of the rifts (IW2013)

In Talich war was an everyday matter, before a planet fragmented in many countries, it led to the situation that only three of them were standing in the events of the game:
The Kingdom of Jittara, The Empire of The Flame Dawn and Genesis Industries.

The game begins with the fight of the army of the Flame Dawn against the border outpost of Genesis Industries, after destroying it and killing Syvva, the woman in charge of it, the army invades the country and advances to  Neon, the capital of GI.
Lucca, one of the most important commanders fight against Aberion the leader of the Flame very near of Neon, but before the combat finished, the opening of a rift to the Untamed World near the battlefield put an sudden halt to it.

Aberion and Bromich entered with an expedition to see what was inside, they found the Untamed world, an hostile planet with endless possibilities, both sides (Aberion and Orion the leaders of FD and GI respectively) seeing a lot of profit in it decide to make an indefinite truce and help each other to exploit it, collaborating (some of them unwillingly) to fight the habitants of it (The Warpath). It's important to say that Orion would never trust Aberion again so now he will be more reserved with his discoveries.

To understand the relation between GI and FD one must recall before the opening of the rifts, the Flame Dawn was a Roman-like empire sustained in war and tithes, GI help them conquering selling them technology, when the tables turned on them, being one of the three countries left and the next to be conquered, Orion decided to be more cautious with his alliances.

Meanwhile the same situation happened in Reisch, the Verorians, a matriarchy leadered for the Immortal Sorceress Aleta and helped by her subordinates Rita and Candit tries to break the Wall of Jin Hai, the most important line of defense of the Descendants of the Dragon, but another rift to the Untamed World shifts their attention, although they continue the war effort without any idea of peace.

In the Untamed World the Warpath leadered by their Aleta would fight against the invasors, mighty and numerous they gave hell to FD, GI and the Cult of Verore.

And then two new factions appeared, the Sleepers appeared from numerous rifts, devouring or assimilating anything in their path and The Exiles who created partly by Verore's Aleta carelessness were now a true threat to her.

Rise, the Sleepers and the Exiles joins the table.

The tendency of Aleta of sending people to die to the wastes has take her toll, a race of demons with capacity of corrupt any human has appeared to their west, althugh could make use of them at the beginning, chaining and absorbing the energy the Prince of the demons Vasir, soon the war would turn on them to the point of losing their better stronghold, the Veroria keep to them although they could hold more or less their ground.

The most important threat were the sleepers of Avarrach, the inhabitant of a planet (Avarrach) that was infested with nanomachines (part science, part magic) which converted any being alive in a mechanical irrational being, this beings, like zombies attacked irrationaly anything in their path, all the factions centered their priorities in fighting them, one could say it was the sleepers against everybody else.

Infestation, the sleeper war

The Warpath fell like flies before the sleepers, and as the Untamed World was the main battleground it was burned almost to the ground. Between their causalties were Henekeem and possibly Rakarl.

The Flame Dawn lost Bromich, their second in command when he sacrificed himself to stop the invasion in their borders, the incident involved a giant undead dragon and a jetpack.

In Talich, Orion had a plan, after Justin the first expeditioner didn't came back from one of the rifts where the Sleepers used, he sent Aleta, not only immortal and immune to the virus but a genius to one of the rifts where the sleepers came from to find a solution, a cure to the virus. If somebody could, it was her.

Aleta traveled night and day, fighting the dead in the air, after finding the origin of the virus in the archives of Kyrallic, the former culture center of Avarrach, she also a sad truth: The virus was a creation made by the former habitants of Kyrallic, a stp near to perfection, nanomachines made with the combination of the DNA material of an immortal like her were corrupted by a virus that changed radically the purpose of the invention.

This nanomachines  the vital organs of your body in a mechanical mess in a painful transformation, but also make you infect anything near you , this eventually destroyed the entire world of Avarrach, granting their inhabitants a twisted immortality.

Aletasoon  found the immortal, a copy of her, another Aleta, this young woman lost all rationality after centuries of pain, she was alive, yes, but totally crazy.

As their best card, GI Aleta bring her back to Neon so maybe they could find a cure using her, they were the only interested in that course of action, the rest of the factions were happy simply burning the sleepers to the ground.
The idea of weaponize the virus were also in their heads, peace wouldn't last after this.

In the Untamed World, one of their spiritual leaders, the prophet Karani, seeing as their world and people were who received the heaviest blow, made a desperate movement to save her people, she gave her life to open a rift to Solace, home of the Overseers, they have a solution, yes, but not the one she expected.

Ascension, The Overeers of Solace
The Overeers of Solace, angels that transcend physical form, seeing that the Sleepers were a danger to their interest entered the war, defining more or less the sides that the factions would take when the war was over. Flame Dawn and the Descendants of the Dragon worked for them, although the DoD are being careful with them; seeing their best interest, Genesis Industries joined temporaly to the war effort, with the Aleta as a secret to everybody else.

Sol, the leader of the OoS have a very different concept of morality, in his opinion, any threat to he and his people needed to be elimnated quickly and brutally, they burned the Untamed world to the killing the sleepers and anything in their path, the world and the Warpath are still recovering, their Aleta, after seeing the selfishness of the angels, swore vengeance against them.

Lucca of Genesis, Xi of the Descendants and Kali of the Flame Dawn were granted the Overseers power to help in their fight against the sleepers, winning wings in the process (They ascended therefore the name of the expansion)

Vasir managed to get free of his chains and flee to the Wastes taking a captured Aleta with her, ready to make her pay for his torture.

After an indefinite time of fighting, the sleepers were destroyed, the living won, but it wasn't all over. They discovered Orion intentions and OoS and the FD fought together against Orion and his droids, who wanted that his men and the two Aletas could escape ,
Orion made a last stand, and in an intense battle the leader of Genesis Industries was killed and Aberion ascended winning immesurable power, what he wanted, sealing his alliance.

Order, the aftermath
The Sleeper have been annhiliated with The Last Sleeper as only evidence of their former power.

The Overseer wants to take control of the worlds with help of the FD (DoD, prefer to be simply subservient, the Warpath is slowly recovering and their Aleta, now called the Immortal Survivor is in quest of vengeance against the Overseers.

Genesis Industries is also fighting them, they are in this moment their most dangerous enemy, the sacrifice of Orion gave them an invaluable opportunity that they will be eternaly grateful, with a memorial in Neon,.

After the war the new three angels took different paths
Lucca came back to GI ready to help them.
Xi decided to came back to her country and help them in all she could.
Kali contnue indirectly with the Overseers caming back to the Flame Dawn.

But by the moment the Angels, leadered by Sol, seem invincible and eager to take control of everything.

Opression, The tyranny of the Angels
Their power is almost completely solidified although the war continues, in Veroria the former lieutenants of Aleta; Rita and Candit (and the leaders of the cult after her capture) are fighting between them for gaining the total leadership of the Verorian Cult.

The Warpath is recovering at good rate and ther future seems hopefully good for them, alas when the old generation dissapeared, a new one fluorishes, stronger and bigger.

And finally, the Aleta of Talich has managed to save the Aleta of Avarrach, purifying her of the Virus, They found a cure, something that everybody else thought was impossible, and now they have the capacity of gather the power of Avarrach, maybe they can move the balance to their favor.

The Overseers control almost everything with no intent of giving up their power, some people want to change this, we'll see what will happen in the next expansion.

The war continues, and nobody knows how will end, but it's irrelevant, because in Infinity Wars when a war ends another soon follows.

Give me if you want opinions of the summary, it's appreciated to know if I skipped some important details, thanks for reading.

EDIT: Added some things missing thanks to Conquest and CommunistMountain for the info.
EDIT2: More edits, thanks to Symphony for the info.
I'll also update the post when new expansions will appear.

A few things I noticed specifically missing; if I remember correctly:

Order brought the death of Orion, once he refused to reveal Aleta, Immortal Sufferer's location.

The Overseers were brought by the Prophet Karani's sacrifice; there were further details, such as interaction with Cheryl, but the lore is being reworked, so only this event we can really say for sure is true

As for Oppression, "The Overseers are guarding the rifts and interrogating those who have entered them." - Poga. The DoD are weary of the angels, but are curious and wish to learn from them, as we can see from Lance of Jinhai's flavor text. By looking at the art of the cards released in Oppression (such as Tyra and Ex), it seems the Genesis Industries are the faction most oppressed by the Overseers. Ironic really. -Insert story of Icarus here-

The specifics of these events are vague, and remember that the lore is currently being written into its final form right now. The only events we can probably say happened for sure are those shown in the new campaign and in the flavor texts.

I'm personally curious as to what will come of Avarrach, as it is now uninhabited. Perhaps the Genesis will take it over once they're not oppressed, as it was a world of technology.

No info on Warpath at all?

Other accounts of mine can be found on Spacebattles and Sufficient Velocity.

Lucca, Xi and Kali join the Overseers' anti-Sleeper effort during Ascension, and Xi defects from the Overseers during Oppression, returning to the Descendants.

It should be noted that all Factionless cards belong to the time period before IW2013, regardless of set (Single Combat and Ethereal Fusion were possible since Agent Coyle is a time traveller).

The Factionless world and ours are quite different, as there are instances of magic (unless you consider them sufficiently advanced technology, but that would be a far cry from your claim of "slightly more advanced technology") in the Factionless world, e.g. Firebolt, the Calamity, Enyah, Cheryl, Radariah and Jubalia. Besides, if the Factionless world were like ours, where are the bombers, fighters, drones, aircraft carriers and nukes?

I'll edit to include what you say in the first one, thanks

The second paragraph is a good distinction, I'll modify it to say that is regardless of set.

In the third I think I have to disagree, the cards you put as an example, except Firebolt are not good examples, the Calamity was a catastrophic event but maybe wasn't man made, it maybe could happen here tomorrow and being indifferent to their technological level.
Meanwhile  the angels if I am not mistaken have been retconned to being part of the Overseers  facton e.g. Agent Cheryl, last to leave.
It's right that maybe the "It's a world slighty more advanced than ours was very speculative but seeing some cards made me that impression.

Enyah is certainly from after the Calamity given that she is apparently juggling Dimensions.

Not really. The nanobots (created based on Aleta's DNA) and just overall technology flourished in Avarrach. It's what made possible for people to live longer, better lives. The problems arrived when:
1. a virus rewrote those nanobots and started taking control of the people (source: IW's indie gogo description)
2. Remnants of magic inside the nanobots made them 'wake up' and take control (source: CG's lore compilation in the Network).

No, seriously, back when that campaign mission was still there, you could avoid Bromich's death with a timed exhaust. I have refused he being dead ever since :v

Are you sure? With I read in Tvtropes it seemed strange I would like to confirm it somewhere before edit it.

For one thing, the Tvtropes page for Infinity Wars is sadly horribly out of date.

On a different subject, pretty sure Coyle is a post-calamity, non-immortal, likely time-traveling, power-absorbing fellow. But the Coyle lore is really messed up and was never defined.

Rule #1 of Coyle lore: give up.

Also its hard to say who died if you aren't forced to kill them off. It would be more likely that Rakarl dies, as he is wiped from your command zone by Angel Fire in the last Warpath campaign mission. Though there are no representations of either of these characters deaths in card form (i.e. like Orion's Grave)

The Calamity is stated to be a Magic ability.
