Title: Returning player trying to understand rotation
Post by: Qweeg on July 10, 2016, 08:19:44 PM
Hi everyone,

I played for a bit a while ago and have just returned and am trying to get my head around things again.  One thing I have seen posts mention in the forum is about Sleepers being rotated out.

Could someone explain what this means please - there's lots of posts that mention rotation but I am not sure I fully understand it.

Are sleepers being completely phased out so the cards will be pointless?  Being phased out for a period of time? available for pick up and play games but not tournaments?  Or something completely different?

Any help would be much appreciated

Phased out means not be playable in ranked/tournaments, the team changed their mind about rotating sleepers tho.

Ah great - thanks ES for explaining.  The wiki is my friend - sorry should have checked there first - as it says they changed their mind in March.

Thanks again,

Rotation was going to work on the following basis:

Ranked legality would be based off of which sets were in the store, and only the two most recent "blocks" would be in the store at a time. Each "block," one faction would no longer receive any new cards to make room for the introduction of a new faction. This would mean that eventually that faction would no longer be ranked legal. There was a chance that the faction would be brought back in the future, but no guarantees. Your cards wouldn't disappear and they would always be legal in non-ranked constructed.

When Yodo1 joined up with LM, all plans for rotation were called off. While I personally think this was a mistake as it prevents the release of new factions (with only 100 cards a set and 8 factions plus factionless it's already pretty crowded--just imagine adding more), but that's their call at this time. The Sleepers of Avarrach were going to be the first faction to be rotated out, but a new SoA card has already been previewed for the next set.

Some thoughts that might or might not be facts:

I suspect that rotation will still happen some day but it's now a fairly long way off and might not be Sleepers. Overseers were supposed to defeat the Sleepers in game lore, which I believe is one reason the latter were chosen as the first to go. Personally I think that Sleepers are one of the most interesting factions and it would be a mistake to rotate them out simply because of lore; gameplay should trump lore.

My guess is that any rotation has been put on hold for commercial reasons. Having lots of cards and factions is a big selling point for a TCG, so it would be a strange move to reduce their number during/soon after relaunch.

This is a common misconception. The Sleepers were designed to be defeated/wiped out and the Lore was written with that in mind. They were also designed with the very real possibility of coming back.
