Title: ~Road to the Rift War~
Post by: Weak_Wolf on January 13, 2016, 12:55:13 AM
"Battle is the most magnificent competition in which a we can indulge. It brings out all that is best; it removes all that is base. All men are afraid in battle. The coward is the one who lets his fear overcome his sense of duty."

Road to the Rift

UPDATE AND CHANGES

ROUND 1 BRACKETS

ROUND 2 BRACKETS

FINALS BRACKETS

The time has come to see who the strongest players in the Rift is, and what better way to test your mettle than with a tournament?

DATE: January, 15th, 9PM IWT (IWT can be seen at the top of the page)

PRIZES: The winner of this tournament will be given 20$; 2nd Place will received 10$, Runner-up will receive a Booster Pack.

HOW TO SIGN UP: Just leave your in-game name below and you will be added to the roster, there will be a total of 10 players in the tournament. If/When you are placed on the roster, I will try and message you to let you know or you can just check the thread as I will try to keep it up to date, you should then construct 3 decks and send me the deck list (List of cards in each deck) by the 14th (The day before the tournament). The sooner the better!

ONE CHANCE FORMAT: Amply named because in your matches you will only be able to use a deck once. In your match you will play THREE BO3 (Best of Three) games. The first player to win TWO BO3 games is the winner.

Prior to each BO3 each player is allowed to chose 1 deck, from their opponents selected deck list that he is not allowed to use (Thus banning it) and leaving the player to pick out of the 2 remaining decks to play with. There is no banning on the third match of a set (If there is even a third match), On the third match of any set, players must play with the deck they have not played with before.

No decks outside of the submitted 3 decks may be used during the tournament and no changes can be made to them at any time. (If you see something that was not in the deck list you must have a screenshot of said card in order to prove your accusation.) While the decks themselves cannot be changed the side boards may be changed at any time prior to the start of the tournament and do not need to be submitted with the decklist. But once the tournament has started no changes may be made to the deck or sideboard.

To win one must be crafty and well versed with multiple different kinds of decks/win conditions. Rely on one deck too much and your opponent can ban it, use decks that are too similar and your opponent may counter it.

The road to power is riddled on both sides with the inequities of the envious, and the tyranny of evil men. A new Rift is opening, and with rifts comes new territory, with territory comes power, and where there is power there will always be those eager to battle for it.

Also I will stream my matches if that is permissible, with an adequate delay of course. (24-48 hours methinks will do it ;) )

EDIT: clarification on the rules. If each player has submitted 3 decks, and your opponent can veto 1 deck, that leaves each player with 2 decks. If they can only use each deck once then in the instance of player one winning game one and player two winning game two, what deck would they use for the match game?

Players must use the deck they have not played with yet ergo there is no banning on the 3rd match of their set.

One more clarification - are deck vetoes sent to you (and then provided to both parties) or to the other player directly?

Well do this by the honor system and have players converse with one another.

Yo wolf, you say you get to ban an opponents decks, what exactly do you know of what they are playing. Exact deck lists? their command zone? their purities? their decks name in deck editor?

Also how are decks for game 1 selected, both people announce at the same time?

As posted you will have to submit to me the deck list of the 3 decks you plan on using, I will post every ones deck lists the day before the tournament, this will give players time to strategize and change their side boards accordingly if they feel their deck is weak to a particular strategy.

Banning a deck is your last line of defense if there is just one kind of deck you do not want to be up against. (Ofcourse this only works for the first 2 matches)

As far as deck list you will know their command zone and every card in their deck outside of their sideboard.

@Weak_Wolf How are you choosing the 10 people who will be participating? Is it sign in order, ranked rating, people you know/recognize, etc? Also when should we submit our decks, before or after we know if we are officially on the roster?

In order of sign in, I plan to leave 2 slots open in case anyone notable wants to join but for the most part it is first come first serve.

Decks should be submitted as soon as possible, but no later than the 14th. As soon as I have recieved all deck lists I will post them all at the same time for you all to see.

That makes sense, so am I in then since I was like the second or third person to ask? Should I get together my decklists and send them to you?

Edit: Just looked at the roster and it answered my question, I'll get my decklists together and send them to you tonight! I'm excited, I love the idea of this tourney with using three different decks on rotation.

Best of one is never mentioned x__x, I say Three Best of Threes. As in, playing a Best of 3, Three times, the first to win 2 best of threes, win the game.

Question: We basically need 9 different commanders total right?

So I cannot run Klore in 2 of my decks?

Your decks cannot have the exact same commanders. If your first deck has three klores in command, your second deck cannot have three klores, but it can have two klores and one aberion, and your third deck cannot have three mlores or two klores and an aberion.

Its basically so your opponent can tell which deck you are using by looking at your commanders.

Question: Do we have to list quantities of cards in our deck?
Because other people knowing and possibly copying my deck exactly card for card is a deal breaker for me. :-X

I can work around it though, by intentionally playing semi-competitive decks. ;D

Yes you have to list quantities of each card, you dont have to use any decks you want to lol, just use which ever deck you think can win. Its completely your choice.

I want to post the decks of winners so that new players and perhaps even old players can be inspired and get a direction of which way the meta is going.

EVERYONE PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE SENT ME YOUR DECK LIST WITHIN THE NEXT 10HOURS.

That is actually a really good point, given that each match may take 15-20 minutes things could drag on. But at the same time there are only 8 players, so it shouldnt take that long. Maybe an hour to complete.

Soooo much tinkercide btw :O I did not expect over half the people to be running it and so few klore decks! (to be fair Tinkercide was like my 4th choice of deck lol) I'm not that surprised by how many people are playing the deck tho simply because of how strong of a matchup it has against basically every deck.

okay... so, to cover the bases and be certain what happens...

It's 3 Bo3 with my guy. I ban one of his 3 decks. so he has 2, but he can't reuse them. So, if it's a tie on the Bo3... do we reuse the same deck or use the 3rd one?

Before you play your first BO3 you tell you opponent which deck they will not be using. After that game they cannot use the deck that they JUST played you with. And are left to chose from 2 decks, the deck you previously banned and their other deck.

In this second BO3 you both tell each other which deck they will not be using. You can select from the 2 decks they have left that they have not played with.

Now if there is a 3rd BO3, meaning you won a BO3 and your opponent won a BO3. Then you both must use the deck you have no played with.

-----------------------------------------

Bans must be made simultaneously, you guys can debate this amoungst yourself, I am sure we are all good honest players, there shouldn't be a need for further arbitration regarding this issue.

Wolf our game crashed. An interaction between two of our cards has broken the game when virus put two martyrs in play. What Do.

Play another game, if someone already won prior to the crash then you dont neeed to start the BO3 all over again, you can just play single games.

I'm unable to contact my opponent : Largenuggets.

If you cannot contact him by 10PM IWT I will declare you the winner.

Lol, not sure why you thought that?!?

If you and ORI are going to play try and be quick, you guys are very very late. I am leaning towards just giving him the win...

Currently waiting for people to report their wins: Try and play your games in a timely manner guys, I dont want players waiting a long time for you to finish your game.

Crap! My bad... For some reason I thought the tourney was tomorrow, so I will be unable to participate due to previous plans for tonight... I'm sorry for the confusion, and good luck to everyone participating! Hopefully there will be more tourneys in this format in the future since I think it is a really cool theme. I would recommend using challonge however or a similar tournament organizer so the details are a little easier to organize and such.

Right now we are waiting for the results of the game between MerlinX and Heliosaflame. Once those are in we will start round 2.

For all players, if you want, please leave me a response, in the post or by personal messaging, letting me know how you feel about the "ONE CHANCE" format. Was it enjoyable, would you like future tournaments to have this same format, did you feel like it added any kind of strategitic depth to the games you played, what kind of strategy did you use with banning and why, and anything else you would like to let me know.

@wolf
it was pretty fun i banned electro's klore deck instantly (because klore)
but i do believe that single elimination is harsh, i mean one of merlinix and helios will be knocked out, and im pretty sure he will be better than some of us who stayed here.

What a shame, dont stress man, there will be atleast 2 more tournaments coming up pretty soon. So you will have plenty of chances to prove yourself.

Seeing as to how you lost due to a crash you can always ask your opponent if he can give you a rematch and not count the disconnect as a win. He doesnt have to say yes, but he may in the spirit of good manners and fair play.

Well I won game three of the match so I won overall.

You keep playing BO3s until someone wins twices. So if you won the first BO3, and you guys had a draw for the 2nd BO3, then you would play a 3rd BO3 and if you win that you win.

Now if your talking about the 4th BO3, since you drew for the 2nd BO3, he is allowed to chose from any of his decks to play with.

That is great news! I'm very excited for the next two tournaments, this was a really cool theme and I was really looking forward to participating.

@Weak_Wolf I also think it would be more fair in the future if the pairings were more random. It seemed like you paired people up by relative skill level, but that can limit the possible outcomes because then one of the "top 2" players will get eliminated game 1. If anything it should be better players vs worse players round 1, because if the worse players lose that round then there is no reason they should make it to the finals and lose there. I don't know if I explained that well, but hopefully you get the idea of what I'm saying. Great job tho everyone!

Lastly, congrats to Merlinix for winning! I wish I could have given you a run for your money!

Actually the rosters were just ordered in terms of who registered first. So the first 2 people to register ended up going against each other, etc..

While it seems poetic to organize the rosters in a way where the best players dont play against each other until the end, it feels kind of discouraging to the lower skilled players when they always find themselves being booted in the first round, at that point why even bother playing?

I like to mix things up from time to time, personally I would rather have a finals where david takes on goliath as oppose to the finals where everything goes according to plan. That was just something I wanted to test for this tournament to see how things would turn out.

TBH I wish I had a replay for the finals so I could see how close it was, how long was the delay on merlinx's stream? he might have it saved.

TL;DR it wasn't close. Helios shouldn't face merlin in round 1 in a tourney like this. Helios lost round 1 while being miles better than everyone else in the tourney besides maybe merlin, including me.

Once again I apologize if it was a dissapointing finals bracket, it was something I was testing out. I wanted to see how an underdog match would work out instead of making it impossible for the "top tier" players to face each other until the very end.

It may be a bit anti climactic, but having a telegraphed finals bracket felt so predictable. I wanted to try and change things up a bit and so when I saw merlin vs helios round 1 I left it as it was, perhaps it wasnt exciting for you. To be honest I dont see myself forcing a finals bracket for the next tournament either. I will randomize the brackets and leave people where they fall. If Merlin is against helios round one again then it is what it is. They were bound to play each other eventually anyways, why does it have to be in the finals?

Then why host a tournament in the first place? Why not just give merlin, helios and the other top people the prize money and let that be it.

I want to do as much as possible to encourage players from all skill levels to participate in the tournament.

Post by: HeliosAFlame on January 16, 2016, 12:10:59 PM
I don't think random brackets are a problem, but your brackets this time were not random.

People play in the order they sign up means that since merlin and myself were the most active and hyped players for tournaments we ended up meeting in round 1.
I would suggest using challong like drew does.

in answer to the post before me you host a tourney rather than just giving out prizes because the point isn't to reward the people you think will win, you reward the people who are actually playing better that day, have chosen better decks etc, sometimes upsets will occur because people have been miss evaluated. David vs Goliath finals are fine but only if David has already proved he has god somewhat on his side, rather than if they had an easy bracket and then get pasted by Goliath.

@wolf u kinda have a point but seeing helios vs merlin on round 1 kills the competition. Almost like it was already settled :P
I think u should make tournies in the futureand restrict anybody who has a champion title ::)
Title: Re: ~Road to the Rift War~
Post by: mattcledford on January 16, 2016, 04:40:44 PM
Restricting champion title is a good idea.

Honestly I had a great match with Wayfinder the first round and Syrian would have beat me, I think, in three sets if his computer was working and would have played a more competitive finals against Merlinix. Not that bad of a bracket.

Again I wont to apologize if this inconvenienced anyone. It was simply what I chose to do (without even looking at the order) and then when I saw that helios and merlin were against each other round 1 I was about to randomize the brackets and then I thought "Wouldnt that be interesting? I wonder if an underdog can beat merlin" This was just something that peaked my curiosity and something I thought I should follow up. But most importantly I didnt want to restructure the rosters just merlin and helios were in round 1 together.

What if I randomized the brackets and they were still both against each other in round 1? Would I then be forced to randomize it again? I am sorry if this turned out a way you guys disliked, the point of this was to have fun and be competitive, I know it sucks to lose round 1 because you got a tough opponent, maybe some people feel like he deserved to go further than he did. But lets not get into this mentality of blaming or trying to control the rosters.

With that said i cant and wont allow myself to start looking at rosters and re organizing them to get set results.

Imagine a brand new player excited to join a tournament for his/her very first time. All of a sudden he face's Merlin round 1 and gets knocked out instantly. This is even more unfair to the new player than Helios or someone experienced facing Merlin. At least experienced players have a shot at beating Merlin. Tournaments shouldn't be about who deserves what prize because that's not how life works. Some very generous people in the world deserve to be filthy rich, but they are not. Helios, I, and Matt had the exact same opportunity to knock Merlin out of the tournament, but we couldn't do so. We have to be the best of the best and beat the best of the best to do so. At least, Weak_Wolf gave an explanation of his matchmaking system, it wasn't self selection.  ;D

When I do I will just buy the money cards for the next 3 tournaments that way this doesnt happen again. Ill leave a mark on my hand to remind myself. Its so annoying, every time i get home and relax I remember I have to do it and think, ill do it next time.
